Guilin 3-Day Itinerary: Li River, Yangshuo & Rafting

Spend one night with Guilin's river-and-lake skyline, then move south through the Li River landscape instead of spending half the trip retracing it.

The shape of the trip

1 night

in central Guilin

1 night

in Yangshuo town

2 rivers

Li River for scale; Yulong for quiet

1 rule

do not make both rafting days

01

Book the rail stations before you plan the sights

Guilin has more than one useful station. If your train gives you a choice, Guilin Railway Station is the easier arrival for the central sights and an overnight in town; Guilin North is farther north. Pick the train that actually works for your hotel and onward timing rather than forcing the itinerary around a station name.

The important catch: Yangshuo Railway Station is near Xingping, not Yangshuo town. It is useful for the end of this route, but leave time for the road transfer if your hotel is in Yangshuo. Use 12306 to check your date's exact stations, train time and passport-ticket requirements before booking.

02

Day 1: Guilin city, then the lights on the water

TODAY'S JOB

See Guilin as a city before you head into the countryside.

Keep the daytime compact. Tomorrow has the early transfer and the longer river landscape.

Morning · Elephant Hill

Elephant Trunk Hill is Guilin's most recognisable landmark: a limestone hill that appears to drink from the river. Go for the Water Moon Cave and the river setting, not a long climb. The view across the water from the Zizhou Park side is often the more useful wide shot.

Afternoon · Prince's City

Jingjiang Princes' City and Solitary Beauty Peak give you a different perspective on Guilin: a Ming-era palace compound and a short climb for a view over the city. Continue to East-West Alley and Xiaoyao Tower for a slower, walkable finish.

Evening · two rivers and four lakes

Choose the night boat only if you want the water to be the evening's main event. Otherwise, walk the lakeside and see the Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas from shore. It is a better use of your time than squeezing in another ticketed attraction.

03

Day 2: Li River, Xingping, then Yangshuo

This is the travel day that earns the overnight in Yangshuo. Leave Guilin early for Yangdi Pier, take the Li River raft if the route is operating, then continue in the same direction through Xingping and into Yangshuo. Do not return to Guilin just to sleep there.

Morning · Yangdi to Xingping

The Yangdi–Xingping stretch is the compact version of the Li River's famous limestone scenery. Raft arrangements, landing points and operating conditions can change with water levels, so confirm the exact route when you book. You may pass Nine Horses Fresco Hill and the landscape associated with the ¥20 note.

Lunch · Xingping

Walk Xingping Ancient Town after you land, have lunch, and leave some unstructured time for the riverfront rather than treating it as a five-minute photo stop.

Late afternoon · Ten Mile Gallery

Continue to Yangshuo town, check in, then rent an e-bike only if you are comfortable riding it. The Ten Mile Gallery is best used as a flexible ride past fields and karst rather than a race between named stops such as the Big Banyan Tree and Moon Hill. Wear a helmet, photograph any existing damage, and do not ride after dark on unfamiliar roads.

Night · Yangshuo town

West Street is lively and easy to reach, but it is not the whole town. Wander it if you want noise and choice; book Impression Liu Sanjie only if a large outdoor show is genuinely part of the evening you want.

04

Day 3: the quieter river route, then leave from Yangshuo

Use the final morning for the landscape that feels least like a sightseeing transfer. The Yulong River runs through rice fields and low karst hills west of Yangshuo; its rafts are hand-poled rather than motorised, so the pace is slower and quieter than the Li River.

Choose one raft experience each day.

The popular Jinlong Bridge–Jiuxian stretch is a sensible first choice, but routes, capacity, height limits and weather closures change. Very young children and pregnant travellers may not be accepted on some raft products. Ask about your exact party before paying; a larger Li River cruise can be the safer fallback when the raft is not suitable.

Morning · Yulong River

Book the raft first, then plan the rest of the morning around its boarding time. Do not arrive with a large suitcase or expect a precise schedule on a weather-sensitive day.

Afternoon · old villages and fields

From Jiuxian, continue by bicycle or e-bike toward Fuli Bridge, then stop for coffee if the weather is good. This is deliberately the unscheduled part of the itinerary: fields, bridges, and the rhythm of a smaller road are the reason to leave time here.

Departure

Build your final transfer around Yangshuo Railway Station's location near Xingping, not around the town-centre map pin. If you return to Guilin first, keep a buffer for the road journey and station security.

If you can add one more day

Choose one extra, not all three

Longji Rice Terraces

Best when you want a full landscape day. Late spring can bring water-filled terraces; autumn colour depends on the harvest calendar. Jinkeng Dazhai is the stronger choice for broad views.

Silver Cave

A weather-proof Yangshuo-side option: an illuminated karst cave that works best as an afternoon addition, not as the centre of an already busy day.

Xiangong Hill

For photographers willing to start very early. The climb looks over a broad Li River bend, but sunrise only pays off if weather and visibility cooperate.

05

Three ways this itinerary goes wrong

  • Treating Yangshuo Station as Yangshuo town. It is not. Leave transfer time at both ends of the day.
  • Trying to make a raft a guaranteed booking. River conditions and operating rules decide what runs. Keep a scenic walk, cave, or town afternoon as a fallback.
  • Putting Longji into this three-day route. It deserves a separate day; otherwise Guilin, Xingping and Yangshuo become transfers instead of places.
