Day 1: let the hillside do the work
TODAY'S RULE
Start high and keep walking downhill.
Chongqing's hardest days are the ones planned as if it were flat. This route keeps the slope working for you.
Morning · Shancheng Lane
Take a taxi to the upper end near Jiashi Elderly Care Home, then follow Shancheng Lane downhill. It is an easier way to understand the old hillside neighbourhood than starting from the bottom and climbing every staircase first.

Continue through Shibati and toward Jiefangbei. Let the route stay loose: the point is the transition from stepped lanes to the dense commercial centre, including the striking building nicknamed Chopsticks Tower along the way.
Late afternoon · Kuixinglou
Kuixinglou is the classic Chongqing spatial joke: you can stand on what looks like street level and discover that the other side of the building is many storeys below. Go for the sense of scale, not a long visit.

Hongyadong's exterior is the sight; the interior is mostly food and retail. See the lights from the outside, then continue to the riverside park for the view with Qiansimen Bridge. If your final stop is the riverfront, do not descend into Hongyadong first: it adds crowds, stairs and a difficult return route.
Day 2: history, industry and the rail line
Morning · Three Gorges Museum
Begin at the Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum for the history that gives the city's geography context. It is beside the Great Hall of the People; photograph the hall from outside unless the interior is specifically important to you. The museum is generally open 09:00–17:00 and closed on Mondays, with last admission at 16:00—check the current notice before you go.
Afternoon · E'ling Testbed
E'ling Testbed is a former printing-factory complex turned into a small creative district. Treat it as a place to wander, have a coffee and see how an industrial site has been reused—not a checklist of shops.

At Liziba, Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2 passes through a residential building. The nearby platform is convenient, but the across-the-river view gives the cleaner photograph of the train meeting the building. Leave enough time for a few trains; do not expect the right shot instantly.

Finish around Guanyinqiao for the city's shopping, food and large-screen energy. This is a better night for snacks than an overplanned restaurant reservation.

This is the day for air, older buildings and a more human scale. Take a taxi to Laojun Cave's East Gate, then make the day a long descent through the mountain rather than trying to see Nanshan as a series of isolated stops.
Morning · Laojun Cave
Visit the Taoist complex and use its viewpoint to take in the city's dense river-and-hill geography. Exit toward the west side when you are ready to continue downhill.

Follow the old path through Huangjueya Old Street and past the former residence associated with writer Sanmao. These stops make sense in this order because they lie along the descent; do not turn them into separate taxi trips.
Late afternoon · Xiahaoli and Longmenhao
These neighbouring old-street areas are a natural finish. Xiahaoli has the more intimate stepped-lane feel; Longmenhao is more polished and commercial. Arrive before dusk and stay long enough to watch the riverfront turn on.
Where to stay
Stay near Linjiangmen Metro
This is a strong base for a first visit: close to the Yuzhong sights without making every evening a long transfer. In Chongqing, proximity to a useful Metro line matters more than a hotel's straight-line distance on a map.

If that is not for you, order a small first round, ask for mild spice, and check the ingredients before committing to a large hotpot.
